Show Ready Sessions

Clear thinking for shows that actually work

Aleksis Gailans

Feb 2, 2026

Putting on a dance show is exciting – but it’s also complex.

There are routines to plan, numbers to juggle, costumes to organise, quick changes to think through, parents to manage, budgets to balance – and very often, all of it sits with one person.

“We could just invite you to look at costumes – but we wanted to do something more valuable with your time.”

At Costume Source, we’ve come to realise that while costumes are an important part of the picture, they’re rarely the hardest part. What teachers often need most is clarity – a chance to step back, see the whole show, and make sure everything works together before things get busy.

That’s where Show Ready Sessions come in.

Why Show Ready exists

I’m Aleksis, founder of Costume Source. Alongside building the business, I’ve spent over 25 years working in live events and production design on major productions where failure simply isn’t an option – from West End musicals to the BRIT Awards and the Olympics.

I wasn’t performing. I was responsible for making sure the show worked – technically and practically – first time.

That experience shapes how I look at shows of any size, because big shows and small shows tend to break for the same reasons.

“Big shows and small shows tend to break for the same reasons – the difference is knowing where to look, and fixing things early.”

As Costume Source has grown, I’ve had more and more conversations with dance teachers who are planning shows and just want a bit of clarity – someone knowledgeable to talk it through with before everything speeds up.

Show Ready Sessions are a direct response to that.

What is a Show Ready Session?

A Show Ready Session is a one-to-one conversation where we look at your show as a whole – not just individual routines or costumes in isolation.

Sessions are held in person at our Sparkle Fulfilment Centre in Bristol, giving us space to talk things through properly and, where useful, look at costumes and practical details alongside the bigger picture.

It isn’t a sales appointment, and it isn’t about judging your ideas. You don’t need to have everything decided before we meet.

Instead, it’s a calm, practical conversation where we talk your show through properly. We explore how design choices, budget, and practical considerations overlap, and how elements like costumes, props, scenery, lighting, sound, and venue realities work together in practice.

The focus is on spotting pressure points early, understanding where complexity will help and where it will quietly cause stress, and simplifying where simplification genuinely improves the show.

And yes – of course we look at costumes too. Just as part of the bigger picture, not in isolation.

Why production design makes such a difference

Most teachers instinctively know when a show feels polished and confident – and when it feels rushed or chaotic – even if they’ve never used the phrase production design.

Production design is simply about how everything looks and feels together: how the show flows, how visual elements sit alongside one another, what reads clearly from the audience, and what is realistic backstage under pressure.

This way of thinking doesn’t make a show bigger or more complicated. Very often, it does the opposite – it removes stress and helps the whole experience feel more intentional.

Shows need to be sustainable too

Many teachers are now being encouraged to think about their shows as something that should support their school, not drain it.

We agree.

Show Ready Sessions acknowledge that reality by helping you avoid unnecessary complexity that quietly adds cost, time pressure, and fatigue. It’s about making early decisions that protect your energy, your team, and the quality of the final result.

This isn’t about turning your show into a hard sell. It’s about making sure the huge amount of effort you put in is supported by a plan that’s realistic, achievable, and worth it.

What teachers tell us

In conversation after conversation, teachers say very similar things – just in different words.

They want to talk their show through with someone who understands how shows actually work. They want reassurance that their plans are realistic. And they want to avoid the familiar feeling of firefighting backstage on the day.

Show Ready Sessions create space for exactly those conversations.

“My job has always been to make sure shows work under pressure – that thinking applies just as much to dance school shows.”

The aim, simply put

The aim is to help you put on a show that looks confident and intentional, feels calmer behind the scenes, works on the day, and feels worth the effort when it’s over.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about clarity, confidence, and calm.

We don’t charge for Show Ready Sessions. They’re offered as part of how we support our customers and share experience.

If you’re planning a show and this sounds like it could help, we'd love to hear from you.

Sizing tips

check_circle The most important measurement is the Girth.

check_circle If a dancer is between two sizes, always opt for the larger size.

check_circle Because we stock lots of different styles from lots of different manufacturers, we standardise our sizes to make it easier for you.

Girth
With them standing straight, measure from the top of one shoulder, down the fullest part of their chest, through their legs and back up to the same shoulder.

Bust
With their arms down at their sides, measure the fullest part of their chest.

Waist
Ask them to bend to one side and place the start of the measure at the natural indentation. Once they have straightened up, measure from this point around the waist.

Hips
With their feet together, measure around the fullest part of their hips and bum.

Inseam
With them barefooted, measure the inner leg from their crotch to the floor.
